Training and Capacity Building
TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING (TCB)
Aim
The aim of ABANTU’s training and capacity building programme is to strengthen women’s ability to demand their rights as equal citizens of their communities through deepening their understanding, knowledge and skills of development issues from a gender perspective.
Objectives
The objectives of ABANTU’s training and capacity building programmed are as follows:
- To design and deliver gender sensitive training in the West Africa Region
- To manage and coordinate a network of resource persons who would deliver training in a number of core themes in accordance with ABANTU’s standards and measureable objectives.
- To develop training manuals /reports on women equality and gender equality in ABANTU’s thematic areas.
- To institutionalize monitoring and evaluation mechanisms that would review its training strategy against developments and new priorities in gender and development space.
Target Groups
ABANTU’s training programmes are targeted at the following:
- Individual women at the local level
- Representatives of local groups and organizations
- Advocacy groups, NGO’s, Networks, Political parties
- Media
- District Assemblywomen
- Students(Tertiary and Senior High Schools)
Types of Training
ABANTU delivers the following training programmes:
- Strengthening the organizational capacities on Gender and Policy Analysis.
- Promoting knowledge and skills for Resource Mobilisation and Funding.
- Strengthening capacities on Gender and Gender Analysis.
- Strengthening capacities on Gender and Climate Change.
- Strengthening capacities on Gender, Conflict and Peace.
- Enhancing capacities on Gender, Politics and Decision-making
- Campaign strategies and leadership skills for women
Achievements
Over the years, ABANTU has achieved the following as result of implementing it training and capacity programmes:
- Organised programmes to benefit over 2,000 women and men. Usually 80percent (80%) of training participants are women with 20 per cent (20%) as males. This is an Affirmative Action Policy.
- A total of ten (10) raining manuals on different topics have been produced with individual report on each training activity.
- A core group of twenty-five (25) resource persons or trainers developed and supported to prepare and deliver ABANTU’s training programmes.
- Strengthened collaborative relationship with network partners, coalitions and resource persons with co-benefits for ABANTU’s organizational development.
Challenges
The following challenges have been encountered:
- Sheer demand for the training
- Changing political and economic context and the need to quickly strategise to be responsive to the needs of different target groups.
- Resource constraints
Way Forward
ABANTU is working hard to develop curricular around its training themes so it can move to a higher level of strengthening capacity through the set-up of a separate institution.
