Lydia Mensah Essel

Lydia Essel-Mensah is an Akan and a married Christian who worships with the Methodist church. She holds an Advanced level Certificate from Nsien College. She is a photo journalist who takes photos and writes stories when necessary and works with the Graphic Communications Group. She has realized in her line of work that many children are not in school and are really poverty stricken. The schools at certain rural areas are nothing to write home about. In 2005, she went to lake Bosomtwe and found children who go fishing to fend for their families instead of going to school and their parents really do not see the essence of education to their children. Such are the stories she covers to attract people’s attention.

The greatest challenge in her work is that sometimes people do not allow for their pictures to be taken and so they sometimes have to hide to take them. It really takes a lot of courage in doing that because when you are caught you definitely will not have it easy with the people.

She wants to leave a good legacy for her children to continue. She hopes by the year 2020, women in Ghana will be more educated and our democracy will grow better than it is now.
