Women in Academia
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Justina Addo (Mrs.)
Mrs Justina Addo is a 30 year old Catholic woman who hails from Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana. She is married and has been teaching for the past 10 years. Currently she is at Ebenezer Senior Secondary School (Dansoman Last stop) where she teaches English Language.
She attended the University of Education Winneba where she obtained a Bachelor of Education Degree in English. She said, that at the university the females were dominating the males since it was a language class. She is the club patron of Young and Wise and both a form mistress and a housemistress.
As challenges of her work, she mentioned that there are no enough materials for teaching (textbook). The students do not also co-operate because some are even not learning conscious .Further; she is of the view that the motivation to urge teachers give out their best is generally low in the country.
In suggesting solutions in addressing some of the challenges she mentioned that she wants parents to talk to their wards about the importance of education in order to ease the teachers work. Government and stakeholders on the other hand, should help provide teaching and learning materials for schools to make impartation of knowledge much easier.
By reading religious materials she gets inspiration from God Almighty. The family members and husband through encouragements and advice keeps her going in life.
She really wants to improve academically which will make her marketable to other sectors in the world of work. Talking of the Ghanaian women, she wants them to improve themselves economically so as not to depend on other sources. As women, they should be encouraged by the women activist groups to have confidence in themselves to take up political roles.
