Women in Academia
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joyce Amarboye (Ms.)
Ms Joyce Amarboye is a 43 year old married Ga woman with a boy and a girl as her children. She is a Presbyterian with two dependents and teaches Business Management at Accra Academy. For the past twenty years Ms Joyce has been teaching.
She shared that her father died at a tender age so she had to help her mother take care of her other siblings. Thus, she dropped out of boarding school to sell. This led to her having interest in trade than schooling but was advised to go to the training college which she did but comes home every weekend to sell in support of her education.
She holds a bachelor's Degree in accounting from the University of Education Winneba and a diploma in Education (Accounting) from the Kumasi campus of the same university.
Having study leave without pay and the low salary level in the teaching service makes the advancement of academics very difficult. However, she is inspired by God who sustains her life as well as her husband who tells her it shall be well no matter the age.
She wants Ghanaian women to set goals for their lives and be part of policy making in the country. Therefore, women must be encouraged, developed and exposed into those areas. Her vision for the future is to set up a school probably from.............to the Senior Secondary level and a communication centre to rely on during her pension in order not to be a on her children. To her if teachers' grievances are not attended to, interest in the public sector will be lost and the private educational institutions will take up.
