Institutional Development
Institutional Development of ABANTU (IDA)
Aim
The aim of the institution development of ABANTU (IDA) function of the organization seeks to ensure that commitment to women rights and gender equality are fundamental building block of ABANTU’S existence and growth. This means that in areas such as recruitment, staff development, remuneration, work environment, programme design and implementation as well as financial management are operation to address systematic inequalities and enhance women’s rights and gender equality.
Objectives
The specific objectives of the IDA function are as follows:
- To ensure that a gender policy is in place and is operationalised to enhance ABANTU’s vision and mandate.
- To ensure that its programmes, recruitment and other institutional building initiatives, women’s right and gender equality perspectives including.
- To institutionalise a staff development programme that enables women and men within the organization to advance themselves in terms of their competence, learning and ability to participate in decision-making to promote women’s rights and gender equality.
- To enhance compliance with laid down regulation and condition of service pertaining to the non-profit sector in the country. This includes compliance with laid down procedures for effective financial management.
- To enhance that all individual work to enhance ABANTU’S development and growth as well as that of its partners in an equal and beneficial manner.

- Financial Institutions
Types of IDA initiatives
The following are types of IDA activities:
- Office meetings
- In-house and External training opportunities for staff
- Financial management and Administration meetings
- Management meetings
- Programme meetings
- Monitoring and Evaluation exercises.
Challenges
The main challenges of promoting a gender responsive institutional development process in an organization such as ABANTU are as follows:
- The size of the organization in relation to the enormity of the size of its vision of promoting gender equality and women’s right.
- The challenge of attitudinal change in a world where gender inequality persist.
Achievements
- Under ABANTU’S IDA function, the following have been some of the achievements
- A share vision among staff on women’s right and gender equality
- Existence of a learning culture in the organization
- Consultative and participatory approach utilized in decision making process in the organization
- Low staff turnover as a result of the promotion of a feminist development culture.
- Compliance with laid down statutory obligations in relation to the functioning of NGOs.
- Committed partners, donors and other collaborators.
- Strong emphasis on coalition– building networking and partnerships.
