Women in the Media
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Augustina Tawiah
Augustina Tawiah is a Fanti who comes from Gomoah Mankesim, born on March 13 1979 in Accra and a Methodist. She is a reporter on Children’s issues specifically child health at Graphic Communications Group. She had her secondary school education at Wesley Grammar from 1996-1998 and continued to Ghana institute of Journalism from 1999-2001,did a six months attachment with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Ghana Television (GTV), Ghana News Agency (GNA), Peace F.M and in New Times Corporation where she spent most of her time. She did her national service at Afigya Sekyere District, Agona Ashanti.
The worst challenge she goes through in her work is the frustration of booking appointments for interviews and getting a ‘not ready’ response on the due date. She was awarded the best worker in the Junior Graphic awards, 2005. She hopes to be an international journalist and hopes to see her family more united and not lacking in anything.
She talked about the fact that some bosses at graphic are females so that is a challenge to women to work harder to attain such heights and be independent. She believes women MPs should qualify for such positions before being put there to ensure higher output in decision-making in the country. When ‘unproductive’ women are put in such positions, their male counterparts will look down on them and that will not auger well for other women who would want to be there and work harder. Therefore she is against giving women some quota anywhere.
There should be more education on gender issues and she believes that is the best way to bridge the gender disparities.
Ghana should stop relying on donor support and learn to be self sufficient.
